• EXPLOSION#16 THE COUPLE
TEXT

2007/EXPLOSION

For this project the artist constructs a series of domestic tableaux, each representing the intimacy of a family reunion. Subsequently, the tableaux are blown up while a camera records the explosion. The artist then reconstructs the tableaux. Explosion thus comprises the construction of the domestic interiors, a video of the explosion and the reconstruction of the tableaux. For the final phase of this project, the artist envisages a screening of all the explosions staged during the course of different exhibitions, and the reconstruction of the domestic interiors.
The scenes the artist chooses to represent are snapshots of ordinary, every day life. In this way, the contrasting explosion is an act of domestic terrorism, in which an unknown force brings about the destruction of ordinary daily actions. The idea behind the project is that, although in a physical sense the explosion is violent and destructive, it also represents an occasion for reconstruction, a means to repair and revive what has been subjected to abuse. Like the restoration of an art work, what is intact must be preserved, and what has been destroyed must be reinstated.
